Heavy Branch Cider’s story begins in 1977 over lunch in Paris. A young university student, Paul, sat at the table with his Grandpère and Uncle Jean. As usual, their conversation shifted to French beverages, and Jean, a Rhône wine enthusiast, made a joke about cider. However, the Maubert family was from Normandy and held one of France’s last private licenses to produce calvados, an apple brandy. Being a proud Norman, Grandpère wouldn’t let the joke go unchallenged. “Cider can be as fine as Champagne,” Grandpère insisted.
That idea stuck.
Paul inherited more than just an opinion — Grandpère entrusted him with cider-making wisdom from generations of tradition: blend the right apples, select the right yeast, and master the cellar. Above all, be meticulous.
